India’s Energy Sector: From Power Deficit to Clean Surplus

Over the past 15 years, India’s energy sector has been on a transformative journey — one marked by infrastructure, innovation, and inclusion.

⚡ Capacity Expansion

Installed capacity has tripled, from 159 GW in 2010 to nearly 485 GW in 2025, ensuring grid resilience, regional coverage, and demand matching.

🌿 Renewable Revolution

India has successfully rebalanced its energy mix:

  • From 64:36 (non-renewable to renewable) in 2010
  • To a balanced 50:50 share in 2025

This marks a strategic shift toward sustainable generation in line with climate goals.

🏗️ Private Sector Emergence

In 2010, government entities controlled over 80% of installed capacity. Today, private players hold 55%, including a dominant 76% share in renewable energy.

This shift has catalyzed capital efficiency, innovation, and scale.

✅ Zero Deficit Milestone

A major milestone: India has erased its power deficit, from over 10% in 2009–10 to 0% in 2024–25

🔧 What Lies Ahead

With supply in check, the next wave of value lies in:

  • Reducing Transmission & Distribution (T&D) losses (~20%)
  • Scaling storage, smart grids, and renewable infra

India’s energy shift is not just quantitative — it’s structural and strategic.

It’s time for investors, policymakers, and citizens to power forward with purpose.
